Post 1: Reminiscing about your experiences of outdoor play

Children playing with fruits of a tree in a slum in New Delhi

 Hello Everyone!

We are very pleased to invite your thoughts for our first blog post.

To make this post special, we decided to take you down the memory lane and recollect your experiences of outdoor play. Tell us anything and everything about it (for example, where did it happen, who were your playmates, what equipment did you use, what games did you play). We would also love to see any pictures from your childhood. This post will make you nostalgic, we promise!

Really excited to sharing and reading the experiences.

PS: Please don't forget to add the tag (Post 1) to your blogpost.

Warm Regards,

Debra & Simran

  1. Hi everyone, some of my favourites memories include free roaming on military bases in the woods and all over the base with my 4 siblings. We were mostly left to our own devices and all the military kids would hang out in the outdoors, playing games, discovery places, and just feeling so free. The rules were simple - the older kids looked after the younger kids and set the games and rules for play & we stayed outdoors until dinner time. Post 1.

  3. Hello Everyone. I spent my childhood outdoors playing with my many cousins and my sister. Hide and go seek in the horse fields, frog hunting in the ponds, climbing trees, swimming, etc. We spent entire days outside and didn’t go home until it was dinner time. Sometimes we would continue our play after dinner, it was so exciting to spend that time together and be outdoors. 😊 post 1.

  4. Hi Leanne - sounds great! Sound like my childhood as well - lots of freedom to explore and only back home to eat:) Just to let you know that we're still waiting on others to join the blog but the three of us can get the conversation rolling. In the meantime, I'm wondering what you might be excited most about new training focused on outdoor play within your agency?

    1. Hi Debra. I think I'm most excited about learning alongside others to gain new ideas/knowledge/information to incorporate into planning for our outdoor play environment. We love our outdoor environment and are always looking to improve the space to enhance the children's natural sense of wonder and curiosity.

    2. Awesome Leanne - thanks for sharing! Happy to say we have a few new people who will be joining our blog site - thanks for being so patient here waiting for us to work out all the kinks! We'll have more chatting going forward once the others join. But feel free to post as you like in the site. We'll ask everyone to share a favourite story of outdoor play once we get rolling:)

  5. Growing up in India, my earliest memories of outdoor play have been in the complex of the apartments where I lived. I remember going outdoors every evening for an hour at least to play with my friends. We played hide and seek, hopscotch and cricket. I lived in a concrete jungle, and there was little room to engage in nature play. Reading your outdoor play experiences, I wish I had those encounters with nature.

Years later, while working as a research assistant in a migrant slum in New Delhi, I witnessed children's outdoor play. In the absence of play materials and equipment, children used natural elements such as twigs, mud and seeds. Attached here is a picture of children playing a game called gaddha, meaning a pit in English, using fruits of a tree. This outdoor game resembled a board game and allowed children to hone their numeracy skills such as addition and subtraction.

  8. My memories of playing outside as a 8-12 year old include riding around the neighbourhood on my bike, or rollerblading. I loved playing on the climber, making up games and being the Queen of the monkey bars. I was also very fond of skipping. I played soccer in a league and joined my classmates at recess to play games of soccer or tag. I remember going to friends' houses to see if they were home and wanting to come out. We would play in the "forest" (a very thin stretch of trees along the pathway to the park) and climb the trees, sitting on the branches and chatting. As a toddler, I remember my Nana making me tents under the clothes liner so that we could play with the Little People House set. We (my sibling and I) often ran through the sprinkler or swag on our swing set.
