Thinking outside of the box Thursdays: Is bare feet play supported in your play spaces?

Given there are several benefits of playing in bare feet (e.g., enhanced sensory experiences, strength and balance), are children supported in playing in bare feet in your workplace, indoors and/or outdoors? Why or why not?

How can we advocate for bare feet play?

  1. We do support barefoot play. I notice it happening alot indoors and occasionally outdoors. I'm open to any advice on how to be a bit more comfortable with it happening outdoors when there are so many obstacles to step on.

    1. That's amazing! Do you notice that some children are more drawn to barefoot play than others? In terms of feeling more comfortable, I would suggest regularly scanning the ground for hazards, and also taking the children's leads. Sometimes I notice children walking in bare feet on a surface I would personally find uncomfortable (e.g., gravel), but they are comfortable with it. Children generally seem to tolerate a lot of surfaces with bare feet, and bounce back quickly if they step on something that is a little uncomfortable.
