Thinking OUTSIDE of the box Thursdays: What materials do children use outdoors?

I'm curious about the type of materials that you are all using during outdoor play...

Do you explore any natural loose parts? What kind of playground equipment sparks the children's interest? What tools or equipment do the children use for play?

I think that large wooden blocks are a great activity outdoors because the children have more space to move and build. Playing with locust pods is also a common activity in our outdoor play space.

I look forward to hearing your ideas!

  1. We have large wooden blocks, various sizes of logs, stumps, tires, garden boxes. The children have access to all different kinds of tools for play - shovels, rakes, garden tools, various sizes and types of containers, bowls, etc.

    1. That sounds like an amazing array of materials! What types of plants do you have in the garden boxes? Do the children get to eat anything that you grow?

    2. This past year we planted tomatoes, beans, snap peas, watermelon, zucchini, etc. The children take care of the garden by watering it and pruning it. They also taste the vegetables and bring them inside to our cook who will incorporate them into our meals. 😃
